Mangalore, Nov 8: A young man accused of allegedly stealing fish from the central market area here was caught, assaulted and then handed over to the police by locals on Wednesday November 8 morning.

The young man has been identified as Nawaz.  He was caught by some people while loitering around fish market area late in the night on Tuesday November 7.  A couple of days ago, fisher women had complained that certain fish were stolen from the market.  Since it became a daily phenomenon, some of them decided to hide within the fish market and wait for the thieves to come.

Accordingly when Nawaz and two of his accomplices came to the market late in the night, they sprung into action and caught Nawaz.  However, two more persons who were with him, managed to escape.  Nawaz was tied to a pillar and was assaulted by locals before handing over to the Pandeshwar police.

Police then rushed him to Wenlock Hospital where he was provided with emergency treatment.  The police sources said that the young man was not in a state to speak and hence no statement was yet taken from him.

Sources said that it is not yet sure whether Nawaz is the actual culprit or has been wrongly caught. Meanwhile the fisher women said to have warned police against letting Nawaz off from their custody.
