Kunal Ghosh suicide bid: Retd. SC judge raps government

Kolkata, Nov 14 (IANS): Taking on the Mamata Banerjee administration for the reported suicide attempt by suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh, who is in judicial custody in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam, former Supreme Court judge Asok Kumar Ganguly Friday said the authorities should have been more careful as Ghosh is an important witness.

"Kunal Ghosh is a very important witness (in the scam), he has said a lot of things and will say more with time. He had already warned that if the culprits were not caught within a few days, he would surely commit suicide, and he attempted too.

"He is under judicial custody. The state administration looks after him on behalf of the court. He had earlier given such a threat. The administration should have been more careful," said on the sidelines of a rally.

Ganguly wondered how Ghosh got hold of the sleeping pills to even try such a deed inside the jail. "Inquiry is on. Let's see what comes out of it".

Ghosh on Nov 10 threatened to commit suicide if others involved in the swindle were not arrested within three days.

Hospitalised in the wee hours Friday after he complained of feeling unwell, Kunal is now stable in the state-run SSKM Hospital.

Police said Ghosh claimed before jail authorities that he had consumed sleeping pills.

Ghosh, who headed Saradha media arm before being arrested in November last year, has been alleging the involvement of several leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress, including its top brass.
