Chacko might be Congress' Delhi in-charge

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS): Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmad may be replaced by party leader P.C. Chacko as the in-charge of its Delhi unit as the former is moving to Canada where his family lives.

Delhi assembly elections are likely to be held early next year.

"Chacko is highly likely to become the in-charge. Mukul Wasnik's name is also doing the rounds," a party source told IANS.

Wasnik was a former minister in the Congress-led UPA government.

Ahmad admitted that he was on his way out.

"I have written to (Congress president) Sonia Gandhiji to discharge me of my present role since I have to go Canada as my family lives there. My wife has some health issues," Ahmad told IANS.

"Elections are round the corner and I won't be back before March 2015. So it is better that somebody else be given the charge," he added.

Asked if Chacko would replace him, he said: "It is up to Soniaji."

Ahmad was appointed the party's Delhi in-charge in June 2013 ahead of last year's Delhi assembly elections which the Congress badly lost. The party's tally in the 70-member assembly fell from 43 to 8.

Chacko was chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee that probed the alleged scam in the 2G spectrum and telecom controversies.
