Mangaluru, Nov 22: In a tragic incident reported at Belvai in Moodbidri near here on Saturday November 22, a young mother along with her two sons allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into the well. Among the three, the mother and one son were rescued, while the other child died.
Jyothi (35) along with her sons Dakshan (8) and Dakshith (5) allegedly jumped into a well in their house, due to depression resulting out of sickness and poverty, it is said.
The locals who saw them take the extreme step managed to rescue Jyothi and Dakshan and admit them to Karkala taluk government hospital.
Unfortunately, Dakshith breathed his last inside the well. It is said that Jyothi had on Friday night explained to the children her plans to commit suicide. Her elder son Dakshan had objected to it. "In the morning, she dressed me up saying that she was sending me to school, but instead lifted me and threw me into the well," said a teary-eyed Dakshan to the media at the hospital.
While Dakshan is a student of second standard at Boslam English Medium school, Dakshit was a first standard student in the same school.
Rs 8 lac loan
Jyothi, daughter of Edapadavu Sadashiva Ameen and Bhavani got married to Navinchandra Poojary of Moodbidri Marooru at Moodbidri Kalyana Mantapa nine years ago.
Navinchandra who was employed as a supplier in a canteen in Mumbai took Jyothi to Mumbai after marriage. Jyothi, who was with their two sons Dakshan and Dakshith came back to their hometown a year ago.
Navinchandra had come to their Belvai house where his wife and children were staying and returned to Mumbai a week ago. In between, he had also visited Tirupati.
The family had fallen sick when they were staying in a flat bought by them in Mumbai. The flat had to be sold to meet their medical costs, and sources also said that Navinchandra suffered a loss in his business. As the house was sold for a small sum, they had to borrow more than Rs lac for their medical treatment. They had to return to their hometown and stay in a rented house due to financial constraints, said Jyothi.
Jyothi in between the grief of having lost her son, said that she tried to put an end to their lives as she could not bear with the troubles.
Moodbidri police registered a case and are investigating.
