Modi's six months: Pursuing his own line and pace

By Amulya Ganguli

Nov 23 (IANS): Looked at from one angle, the six months of Narendra Modi's tenure may be a cause of disappointment for some. For the corporate sector, for instance, the absence of "big ticket" reforms is bound to detract from the prime minister's go-getter image. The business houses may not have said anything as yet about their dissatisfaction, but it is clear by now that Modi is not an ideologically-driven right-winger like Ronald Reagan or Margaret Thatcher.

Instead, he evidently likes to pursue his own line and at his own pace. He will not be hustled, therefore, into drafting a hire-and-fire labour reforms policy which is favoured by industrialists, nor into a return to land acquisition laws reminiscent of the 1894 rules which have now been scrapped.

What is more likely is that he will tweak these laws, including those on environment, and not opt for drastic changes. In this respect, Modi is a reformer, not a radical.

Any expectation, therefore, that his party's majority in the Lok Sabha will make him ride roughshod over the existing rules and regulations will not be fulfilled.

One reason why such dramatic changes have been expected since Modi appeared on the scene like a "rock star", as even the foreign media describe him, is the pent-up frustration in the last years of the previous government among both businessmen and ordinary people caused by the stalled reforms and policy paralysis. It was hoped, therefore, that Modi's changes would be in the nature of a no-holds-barred recourses to a fast-growth path.

Since this hasn't been the case, the belief is that he is as much of a pragmatist as any other politician who will not like to unnecessarily overturn the apple cart.

As a result, while avoiding major changes, the prime minister is currently focussing on what can be deemed small things, such as toilets, cleanliness, e-governance, encouraging the underprivileged to open bank accounts and the celebrities as well as the MPs to "adopt" villages. The last venture has even persuaded a well-known Communist economist to mock the projects as being aimed at turning the people into "mendicants".

There is also another kind of disappointment for some people with Modi. It is the result of the fact that there hasn't yet been what Mani Shankar Aiyar called the "Godhra moment". According to the former Congress MP, Modi is waiting for such an outbreak of communal violence to reveal his real self just as Hitler used the Reichstag fire to impose one-party rule on Germany.

Although the recent riots in Trilokpuri and the communal tension in Bawana on the outskirts of Delhi have been seen as examples of the local foot-soldiers of the saffron brigade fishing in troubled waters, especially with next year's elections to the Delhi assembly in mind, there haven't, mercifully, been any major incident.

What is more, the likes of Yogi Adityanath and Sakshi Maharaj have not only fallen silent, they have desisted - or have been prevented - from carrying on their earlier vicious propaganda on "love jehad" in Maharashtra on the eve of the polls as their followers had threatened to do. It is not impossible that Modi is more serious about his proposed 10-year moratorium on sectarian animosity than what his hotheaded followers had assumed.

It is noteworthy that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief, Mohan Bhagwat, did not mention the phrase, "love jehad", in his customary Vijaya Dashami speech as he did on earlier occasions. Nor did he set any deadline for the construction of the Ram temple, or say that all Indians are Hindus.

Interestingly, the BJP has indicated that it will go soft on the question of scrapping Article 370 of the Constitution which confers a special status on Jammu and Kashmir. Evidently, the hopes which the party entertains of scoring an unlikely victory in the impending assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have persuaded it to dilute one of the key items on its pro-Hindu agenda. Not only that, the BJP has even said that "Islam will prosper" under its rule, a claim which is likely to baffle both Hindus and Muslims, especially the bigoted among them.

There is little doubt, therefore, that Modi has decided to follow a path of moderation which cannot but have a calming effect on the saffron brotherhood. From the standpoint of at least curbing, if not ridding society of any innate communal poison, this evidence of sobriety can be considered to be one of the major features of his first six months in office. Its value is much higher than any achievement, or lack of it, in the economic field.

That the country is advancing even in the economic sector is however evident from the projection of a 6.3 percent growth rate next year by Morgan Stanley. If the trend continues, then Modi can further consolidate his position at the national level even if there are setbacks like the possibility that the BJP may flounder in Maharashtra because of its failure to get a majority in the state legislature.

One reason why Modi's first six months in office have been relatively trouble free is that the Congress not only continues to remain in the doldrums but also that its "internal tensions", as Rahul Gandhi once said, have not subsided, as was evident from the virtual boycott of the party's observance of Jawaharlal Nehru's 125th birth anniversary by party stalwarts like A.K. Antony, P. Chidambaram, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Kamal Nath, Ghulam Nabi Azad and others.

The six months of Modi's rule have been some of the fastest and most Action-Packed months in the 68 years of India's Independent existence, ever witnessed. Even before he starts the development pace he needs to clear the mess created over last ten years of misrule and straitened the ways first. It is like clearing the garbage before the road is made pliable.

BJP used Modi to elevate itself using corruption plank. Modi throughout his campaign relentlessly attacked congress on corruption. Corruption was one issue as anybody could remember, united entire India, when Anna Hazare took up the cause.

This is all to say the entire corruption movement was a game plan of BJP. It very well knew Congress lost power post bofors scandal and only way to thrash them electroally was corruption.
It therefore planted moles everywhere. CAG to leak the reports. Kiran Bedi in Anna Movement. Media friends picking up leaked report and showing it as credible evidence etc. Ramdev and RSS in the religious stream. So, the plan devised by Amit Shah, years back, had actors all through.

Modi was the best choice for BJP, as he fitted the slot effortlessly, combined with money power of Adani.

Winning the election was piece of cake for BJP as the perception against congress was severe, that even Sardar Patel stood for election as PM, the party would have lost miserably.

The question therefore, was corruption a planted issue? I believe yes.
    1) CAG - Vinod Rai, already been proved wrong.
2)Kiren Bedi, alreay shown her colours and now aspiring to be BJP CM in Delhi.
    3) "Congress looted the country for 60years and we will put them in jail" was the battle cry of BJP, even after 6months, there is yet anything to come, that incriminates congress. Where is 1.76lakh crore, 1.86lakh crore, 70k crore, all BJP and media cried as bribe taken by congress?
    4) Where is the black money that was supposed to be back in 100days?

Post election, Modi has smartly deflected people's attention from the issues he talked prior to election. Today, people are talking swatch Bharat, India's raising popularity outside India.
    etc.

Isn't it a fact that when the economy was raising at 9%, BJP started all these games of disrupting parliment?

BJP knows pepole have short memory and it manipulates it very well.

he looks sad that, Modi didnt even do one RIOT!so, that he can get "Mani shankar aiyar" right!!

Blackmoney will be brought only when there is political advantage of doing it.. so, during UP election, this will see light! else, people have very less memory, if one does good work!

Inflation, Growth rate, SAARC breakthroughs, acceptance in the world level, and FDI breakthroughs., bringing back the focus of devlopemtn, power, infra for North eastern states, most importantly BRICS and Japan-china, US-Russia, kind of engagements, where "economical partnerships and trade friendships and dependcies, can reduce the terrorism, and hostile situation" - is a brilliant idea! also not ignoring nepal, bhutan, burma, srilanka, Bangladesh fiji and those small islands as well, and saying YOU MATTER, and we MAKE IN INDIA< will sell it to you..! ... is no less. ..releasing Fishermen, hostage nurses and even pressing for a YOGA DAY is GOOD achivement.. but yes, author must keep his Expectations high...!!

I am sorry...I have never come across, "100 day black money" kind of nonsense from MODI!! I have read the entire manifesto and never came across this .. ( yes it was Rajnath singh, who said this, who buttered his minority appeasement and I have had no hopes from him) ... the manifesto is for 5 years... if they had not got majority, in case of alliance, there wld have been a new Common minimum porgram, again, where if he had omitted anything, I wld have agreed!!

Infact, in manifesto, inspite of having hardliner like MMjoshi as head, there was nothing like a radical stuff "ram mandir, Jyotirganita, Saraswati vandana" was ever introduced.. that is Modi influence!..

well, you may say anything.. but manifestohad one mention of Hindu/muslim... and rest was "technology/development/infrastrutcutre"!! I have faith in him and he should be judged after 5 years!! but ithna toh Sanyam, Seculars se expect nahi karoonga!

In management jargon they say goals should be SMART : Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time bound.

But in Feku's case these are not 'goals' but just 'promises' so they can be unspecific, unmeasurable, unattainable, unrealistic and not time bound. In short they can be fake.

Nothing changed in 6 months, but paid media shows off good morale in the news channels. Do you think India is corrupt free now after Modi? No, Never until this kind of drama exist. Rich gets richer and burden to middle & poor class. No steps have taken to protect them.
Moreover Modi is busy in foreign tour, it is only business wealth people benefited but not common man.
Again he stands like Maun Mohan, he is not speaking on serious issues.

As I have repeatedly stressed, Mr. Modi is ruling India, a small continent of ultra complexities and challenges.

The Gujarathi community has migrated to different parts of the world and they are successful business people especially the Patel community systematically has adopted the Jewish social science in business. So, they did lavishly invest money in Gujarat in the business sector.

Mr. Modi's good intentions will not work that easily while ruling from Delhi due to many challenges and setbacks. He is trying everything to attract the foreign Direct Investment (FDI), but as the world-wide economy is caught up in a cold storm, his dream of FDI will be getting very slow. Besides, the foreign corporation are looking very keenly about the business surroundings in India. Among the "business friendly" nations, out of the 189 countries, India's rank was improved from 144 to 142 in a year. What about corruption and red tape?

    BJP/Modi's agenda were

    1)Black money retrieve
    2)Article 370 abolition
    3)Irradiation/control of corruptions
4)fast track court to deal with politicians/people reps are having criminal cases.
5)containment of inflation(thanks to OPEC countries in bringing $115 plus to below 80$/barrel of crude oil but still raising prices of FCMG are not brought par with oil
    price )etc etc

Industrialist's acche din coming very good as their P/Ls are very very positive..Debt ridden Adani group was given life line throwing $ 1 billion (thanks to STATE BANK OF INDIA)

Communal clashes are taking place everywhere in India Khabi U.P mai,Khabi W.Bengal,Khabi Rajstan mai!!!Sanghis were given free hand ?Modi's series of foreign tour looked like election rally which made institution of PM.............!!!!

Interestingly,Through out BJP's existence these years, their one point agenda was abolition of article 370 but now,as election in Kashmir forth coming, anywhere in the rally or press FM /HM/PM never uttered a word in the Kashmir soil!!!BJP always speaks one aand doing another thing according to convenience.

Modi's election is the biggest joke in India because so many people were impressed by his fake promises and lies on Gujarat Model. This joke will continue for some time till the public realize their mistake and blunder. It will be biggest tragedy for India if by then Modi succeeds in finishing the foundation of India.

It is but obvious for the public not to buy Modi's 'own pace and line 'style as he is the one who made these time bound promises such as '100 days for black money recovery' to the electorate and now even though he enjoys the luxury of no opposition in parliament, the citizens are forced to buy excuses and U turns.
