Burkina Faso unveils interim goverment

Ouagadougou, Nov 24 (IANS): Burkina Faso authorities announced a new transitional government, with Michel Kafando being appointed as the interim civilian President.

Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida, who is prime minister, was also appointed as defense minister Sunday. Kafando will also be foreign minister while the military will take on the key interior ministry, Xinhua reported citing a decree.

Burkina Faso's former President Blaise Compaore fled to Ivory Coast after protesters took to the streets in late October against his attempt to extend his 27-year rule in the West African state.

Zida was then appointed by the military as provisional head of state before he agreed to cede power to a civilian president amid domestic and international pressure.

Kafando was appointed this week to lead the country until new presidential election to be held in November 2015.
