Mangalore, Nov 15: "The number of diabetes patients in our country is increasing at an alarming rate.  A study report by experts on the even of World Diabetes Day has stated that India is the diabetic capital of the world.  We have 30-35 million diabetics patients in our country.  Unless we take ample precautions, we would end up on the losing side sooner or later," said Dr V Udayshankar.

He was speaking after inaugurating a special programme on the occasion of World Diabetes Day jointly organized by Indian Medical Association, Lions Club International district 324 D5 and Mangalore Rotary Central Club at Town Hall here on Tuesday November 14 morning.

Dr Srikrishna Paisari, district president of Diabetic Awareness Programme, Dr B Devdas Rai of Rotary Club, Jayprakash Shetty, president of Mangalore Central Rotary Club, Sadashiv Acharya, president of Vittal Lions Club were also present on the dais.

Earlier Kadri circle inspector S N Chandrashekhar inaugurated the "Diabetic Awareness Walk" which was undertaken by students from Jyothi Circle to the Town Hall.
