20 killed in renewed Sudan tribal clashes

Khartoum, Nov 24 (IANS): More than 20 people were killed and dozens injured in renewed tribal clashes between two groups of the Mesiria tribe in Sudan's West Kordofan state, media reported Monday.

Clashes renewed Sunday morning between Awlad Omran and Al-Ziyoud groups of the Mesiria tribe at Al-Dibab area in West Kordofan state, Xinhua reported citing Khartoum's Al-Intibaha daily.

The latest clashes came barely three days after the conclusion of a reconciliation conference attended by leaders of the two groups, the paper said, quoting unidentified sources.

The reconciliation deal, which capped months of confrontations that killed and wounded hundreds from the two sides, has apparently not reached the area, the paper added.

A dispute over land ownership was blamed for the deadly clashes.

West Kordofan state has most of Sudan's oilfields. The oil-rich Abyei area, which is being disputed between Sudan and South Sudan, lies on part of its border.
