Odisha assembly adjourned till Tuesday amid noisy scenes

Bhubaneswar, Nov 24 (IANS): Noisy scenes prevailed in the Odisha assembly for the fourth day as both the ruling BJD members and opposition parties stalled the proceedings throughout the day Monday. The speaker adjourned the house till Tuesday.

The business advisory committee of the assembly, which met Monday, also failed to resolve the impasse in the house as the opposition Congress members walked out of the meeting accusing the treasury benches of trying to avoid a motion for a discussion on the chit fund issue.

Soon after the house met, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislators entered the house waving banners and raising slogans denouncing the central government's green signal to the Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh. As a result, the house was adjourned until 3 p.m. The state government fears that the project will submerge parts of Malkangiri district in Odisha.

The BJD members also waved placards alleging delays in granting central assistance to cyclone affected people in Odisha.

When the house assembled again, the opposition members caused disruption by raising chit fund issue. Some Congress members also walked towards the speaker's podium.

As a result, the speaker adjourned the house till Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the treasury bench managed to get the Orissa Civil Courts (Amendment) Bill passed amid uproar. "Since parliament session is beginning today, we raised the issues to attract the attention of the union government. We have no intention to disrupt the house," BJD spokesman Sameer Dash told the media.

The opposition alleged that the ruling party created the disturbances to avoid debating the chit fund scam.

"The BJD created history by disrupting the house proceedings," said Narasingh Mishra, Leader of Opposition in the assembly. He said this was because the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was closing the net against the accused in the chit fund scam in Odisha, including those linked to the BJD.
