Jan Dhan Yojana collection touches Rs.6,000 crore


New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS): Banks in India have opened around 7.9 crore accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) and collected over Rs.6,000 crore, an official statement said Tuesday.

Giving the updated figures, Snehlata Shrivastava, additional secretary, financial services in the union finance ministry said that there are various benefits attached with PMJDY like RuPay Debit Cards with Rs 1 lakh accidental insurance to all the account holders,an official statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address to the diaspora in Sydney Nov 17 during his recent visit to Australia, had said 7.1 crore accounts have been opened in the villages in India and the money deposited amounts to Rs.5,000 crore.

The PMJDY, an ambitious programme on financial inclusion to cover all unbanked households in India by Jan 26, 2015 was launched by Modi Aug 28. On an average, 115,000 bank accounts are being opened every day.

The government Oct 27 launched a dedicated website for the PMJDY available both in English and Hindi versions.
