Three killed in eastern Ukraine attacks

Kiev, Nov 26 (IANS): A new round of intense fighting between government troops and independence-seeking insurgents has killed at least three people and wounded five others over the past one day in eastern Ukraine, the authorities and media reports said Wednesday.

"Over the past 24 hours, we lost two soldiers, and two others were wounded," said Andrei Lysenko, spokesman for the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.

The government press service said insurgents carried out 47 attacks, using grenades, mortars, tanks and rocket launchers, according to Xinhua.

The insurgent-run Novorossia news agency said at least one insurgent fighter was killed and three others were wounded in clashes over the past one day.

There were no confirmed reports about civilian casualties.

Overall, the seven-month-long armed confrontation, that started in mid-April, has claimed at least 4,317 lives and displaced 466,800 people.
