Greek unions in second general strike this year

Athens, Nov 27 (IANS/EFE): Greece was hit Thursday by the second general strike in a year called by labour unions to protest government austerity policies which include public sector job cuts and labour law reform allowing easier firings.

The walkout was called by the Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY) and the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) which organised a march from the central Klafthmonos Square to Syntagma, the seat of parliament.

There are also marches scheduled in other major cities such as Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece after the capital.

During the protest, disruption to public transport is expected with railroad engineers taking part and reduced bus and subway services.

Maritime and air transport workers, including air traffic controllers, have also joined the strike, forcing the cancellation of flights throughout the country.

In addition, small business associations and hospitals were also taking part and will only provide minimal services.
