A patient underwent replacement of a heart valve while fully awake, in Omega Hospital in Mangalore, the first of its kind in coastal Karnataka. Addressing a press meet here on Friday, Cardiologist Dr K Mukund, said that Ishaq (24) who was suffering from severe breathlessness and chest pains before he underwent a CT scan at Mangalore Heart Scan Foundation was diagnosed as having severe leakage in the Aortic valve.

A team of doctors comprising Cardiac Surgeons Dr A G Jayakrishnan, Dr Ramachandra Dixit, Anaesthetist Dr Manjunath and Dr Mukund replaced the diseased valve with an artificial one in an operation lasting 3 hours.

The patient was connected to a heart lung machine during the surgery and the heart stopped while the patient was awake and talking. He did not require blood transfusion or artificial ventilation and has recovered very well from the operation, informed Dr Mukund.
