Bangladeshi trawler sinks, 26 missing, one body found


Dhaka, Nov 28 (IANS): One body was found but 26 people remained untraced after a fishing trawler from Bangladesh sank into the Bay of Bengal in the early hours Friday after it was hit by a ship, coast guard sources confirmed.

Coast guards based in the southeastern city of Chittagong told Xinhua Friday that the fishing trawler "Bhandan" sank into the deep sea after it was hit by a ship around 3 a.m. Immediately after the accident, the Shamudrajoy ship started rescue operations and rescued three people.

The coast guard sources said, among the rescued, one was dead. But 26 other people were missing.

The Shamudrajoy was searching for the missing people. A six-member team of the coast guard has set sail from Chittagong to join the rescue operation.
