No discussion on chit fund issue in assembly: Odisha speaker

Bhubaneswar, Nov 28 (IANS): The Odisha assembly speaker Friday rejected the demand of opposition to discuss the chit fund issue, leading to a disruption in the house and its adjournment till Saturday.

Speaker Niranjan Pujari said the chit fund issue could not be discussed in the house as the matter was pending in court.

He cited the opinion of advocate general (AG), which he had sought in this regard. "I have received the opinion of AG. After examining the opinion, I realize that...the chit fund issue cannot be discussed in the house as the matter is pending in the court," said speaker in the assembly.

However, the opposition Congress and the BJP were not pacified and demanded resignation of AG for having no knowledge about law.

"The AG should tender his resignation immediately. The AG perhaps has no minimum legal knowledge. The direction of speaker that the chit fund issue can not be discussed even during the demand discussion is unfortunate and condemnable. It is unconstitutional," leader of opposition Narasingh Mishra told media.

The BJP lashed out at the ruling party for running away from discussion on the chit fund issue.

"The government is so scared that it does not want to discuss the chit fund issue. It wants to protect the BJD leaders, who are involved in the scam. We will reach out to people to expose the government," said state BJP president K.V Singhdeo.

However, the BJD tried to put the blame entirely on opposition. "We want to have a discussion on the chit fund issue. The chief minister, who is in charge of home department, was also there in the house. But the assembly could not transact any business after the ruling of speaker as the opposition parties created disturbance," BJD spokesperson Pratap Jena told reporters.

The house could not function throughout the day as both the ruling BJD and opposition parties created pandemonium raising their respective demands in the house.

The House...was adjourned till 3 p.m. Later, it was adjourned till Saturday.
