Mangalore, Nov 18: A convention of coastal farmers and fishermen will be held at Nehru Maidan here on Tuesday November 21, informed Coastal Karnataka Fishermen's Action Committee general secretary Vasudeva Boloor.
Speaking to presspersons here on Friday November 17, he said that the convention will aim at urging the government to fulfil the demands of fishermen and farmers.
They will demand the initiation of measures to dredge the ports in the state, as the absence of dredging has resulted in the loss of many lives and boats, he said. Many of the welfare schemes brought out by the government have failed to reach the fishermen. Also, demand will be placed for the construction of break waters to control sea erosion in specific areas.
He further informed that a national-level convention of fishermen will be held in Maharashtra from December 9 to 12.
Fishermen leaders Harman Kumar from Sri Lanka and Pramod Madhwaraj, social activist Medha Patkar, World Forum of Fish Workers and Fish Harvesters coordinator Fr Thomas Kocherry are expected to attend the convention.
