India overtakes China in corporate governance rankings

Kolkata, Nov 29 (IANS) : India has emerged as the leader in global developing markets for having the clearest and most comprehensive policies on corporate governance, according to a latest study.

Scoring more than China, India is at par with Malaysia and Australia ranking 4th across 25 markets globally and is at the 2nd spot in the Europe-Middle East-Asia (EMA) market category, said the study jointly conducted by KPMG and ACCA.

Changes relating to the role and responsibilities of the audit committee, the roles of independent directors, and the codified duties of board of directors as a whole helped India score the leading rank.

A higher ranking in corporate governance (CG) essentially builds more confidence in capital markets as shareholders feel assured about the transparency and the efficacy of top management in the company.

According to KPMG, corporate governance is critical for the Asean region on account of the expectations of high growth rates.

"This reflects the improving standard of corporate governance in India over the years. The results of the study are testimony that these are resonating well with key stakeholders and their perception of the governance standards in India is also improving", said Richard Rekhy, CEO, KPMG India.

Corporate governance requirements in terms of clarity, degree of enforceability and number and type of instruments used by the 25 markets were analysed in the study.

The study found that most markets introduced their CG Codes between 1992 and 2004 and on an average, markets revised their CG Codes 2.4 times.

Also, interestingly, it was noted that 76 percent of the markets had revised their CG Codes after the Global Financial Crisis in 2008; however, markets like Indonesia, South Korea and China didn't revise the same for a considerable time.

"There is also a mindset change in how key players in the governance framework engage with other stakeholders including minority shareholders. These, when implemented, can position India even higher in the ranking," Rekhy added.

Before demitting office fmr FM chidambarum, 10 point agenda for the next govt. He outlined the work done by UPA post 2008 economic crisis and also indicated the GDP will grow 5.4percent in 2014 and close to 6 in 2015.

Arun Jaitley most of the time in Hospital so far, not able to done anything till now.

The big ticket reforms are yet to come, like insurance, GST bill etc.
But the problem with BJP they were all against it when UPA is bringing it. The turn around would expose them.

Probably, BJP must ask TOI to have its head quarters in BJP HQ, to mind wash the nation that they were always pro reform and never against the reform bills. Hope Arnab Goswami will do the needful.

Roshan, Mangaluru - Really amused at your comments! I think the utter heartache & frustration of 16th May 2014 4 PM has still not been digested for you...UPA 1 & 2 created the most biggest MESS in Indian Economy & ruined the country...All types of Scams ranging from A to Z...Corruption & inefficiency, non deciceveness spoiled our economic march & progress, country was lasty, self was first for the Congressmen..
Unemployment & killing of the telecom sector!!! I was a victim of this & was without job for 1.2 years until Modi Govt came & revived economy!!!

Country showed them their place in the May elections, not even LoP for the 165 years grand old party!!! & you talk nonsensical on this forum!! People have seen thru corrupt Congress, its MODI & NDA for this great country for the next 10 years & more...Jai Bharat!!

Now there will be a flurry of claims from BJP Govt. to take the credit.
Just imagine in 6 months time they did it...!!! Same like the space mission which was completed within the famous 100 DAYS of being in power!!!
They might even reduce the number of days in a month to accommodate 100 days only in those 6 months to claim the glory.
But I like Modi Government. Everyone can hear them. They are soooo loud.

Former FM Chidambaram prior to demitting office derived a 10point agenda for the next government. If the new govt follows the guidelines in principle, he said the GDP could be around 5.4% current year and next year will be close to 6%. He also indicated the steps taken by his govt., following economic crisis in 2008, to strengthen the governance part.

Current FM Jaitley most of the time was in hospital, so nothing substantial is done to date.

Modi led govt., yet to come out with any big ticket reforms. Just with the expection, the stock market is moving north. The problem however is, any big ticket reform that was to come next it was the BJP, which was all against.
Like GST, Insurance Bill to start with. Specially, Modi opposed GST vehimently. This is a problem for BJP, if they push reforms that they stalled earlier, that would expose them. If they don't, then GDP will go southward. Only alternative for BJP is, to use the social media and visual media, to claim they never been against any reform bills. It works each time.
