Dhaka, Nov 30 (IANS): Mir Quasem Ali, a senior leader of Bangladesh's Jamaat-e-Islami, Sunday challenged the death penalty awarded to him for crimes committed during the 1971 Liberation War.

He submitted a 150-page appeal before the Supreme Court seeking acquittal from all the 10 charges levelled against him, the Daily Star reported.

In his petition, Quasem mentioned 181 reasons, which he said the apex court should consider for acquitting him of the charges.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) Nov 2 sentenced Quasem Ali to death after he was found guilty of 10 of the 14 charges brought against him, including torture, abduction and confinement.

Citing from the petition, Quasem's lawyer Shishir Monir said ICT-2 had wrongly convicted and sentenced Quasem Ali to death as the tribunal could not properly examine the documents and evidence submitted by him.

The Supreme Court is yet to fix a date for hearing the appeal, Monir said.
