Mumbai, Dec 1: “Journalism and movements need not necessarily be the same but journalism can proceed as the correspondent for pro people movement. Though the principle of Naxalism is just, the way it is followed is not right. No movement supported by arms can be just and will not come under the framework of democracy. So journalists have to face it. There is a discussion on Hindu fundamentalists at present. However, Muslim fundamentalism is all the more notorious and is operating in undivided Dakshina Kannada district. Hindu fundamentalists leave evidence behind making reporting work for journalists easy. On the other hand, Muslim fundamentalists act with utmost caution leaving no proof behind, causing difficulty for journalists to report such incidents”, said Navin Surinje, a well known journalist from Karnataka.

He was speaking in the 'Communalism and its background' programme held at J P Nayak hall at Kalina Campus in Santacruz east on Saturday evening, November 29. The programme held under the aegis of Mumbai university Kannada department and the association of Kannadiga journalists, was sponsored by Kendra Sahitya Academy, New Delhi. He praised the Kannada journalism in Mumbai.

Well known columnist, Ravi R Anchan spoke on love and strength of journalism. “Kannada journalism has a long history in Maharashtra. Journalism should give way to discussions. Journalists should uncover truth”, he said.

“The programme is meant to commemorate the journalists. Journalists these days do not portray the movements of ordinary farmers. They should publish that there is no exploitation as grave as Madey Madey Snana in Kambala”, he said.

Late M V Kamath, a well known journalist, was paid homage during the programme. Journalist Dinesh Shetty Renjala, advocate Vasanth Kalakote and Dr Mamatha Rao spoke praising late M V Kamath.

Journalists association honorary chief secretary Rons Bantwal, honorary secretary Harish K Hejmady, joint secretary Premanath S Shetty Mundkooru, Gurudatt Poonja Mundkooru, S Daya, Jaya Poojary and Harry Sequeira among others were present. B S Kurkal of Patrapushpa monthly, Dr Sunitha M Shetty of Bantaravani monthly, Ashok S Suvarna
of Mogaveera monthly, Aparna Rao and others participated in the discussions.

The programme started with prayers led by Veena Shastri. Dr Poornima Sudhakar Shetty compered the programme. Journalist Janardhan S Puriya proposed vote of thanks.
