Man gets life term for killing wife

New Delhi, Dec 1 (IANS): A court here has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife by inflicting 21 injuries with a vegetable peeler and a brick.

Additional Sessions Judge Vidya Prakash jailed 28-year-old Bihar native Devender Dass for killing his wife at their residence in west Delhi.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs.10,000 on him.

"The object of sentencing is that the offender does not go unpunished and justice be done to the victim of crime and the society," the court said in its Nov 28 order which was released to the media Monday.

According to police, Dass's neighbours reached his house Nov 1, 2012 after hearing some noise and saw his wife lying in a pool of blood and the convict sitting in the room.

Relying on the testimony of two witnesses, who were neighbours of Dass, the court said: "The conduct of the accused that he tried to escape from the spot after the door of his tenant's room was forcefully opened when the body of his wife was lying on the floor of the room and his two minor children were sleeping nearby the body of his wife, is a material fact and is an admissible piece of evidence."

The court also observed that Dass confessed before one of the witnesses that a quarrel took place between him and his wife in the night and he inflicted injuries upon her with a vegetable peeler and a brick, as a result of which she died.

It said the deposition of his neighbours was "found to be quite natural, plain and trustworthy" and the prosecution proved that the complete chain of events "unerringly" pointed towards Dass.
