Udupi: DK district bags championships in state-level sports tourney

Udupi, Dec 2: The state-level high school boys and girls floodlit tournament - 2014-15 came to close at the Mahathma Gandhi District Stadium, Ajjarkad here on the evening of Monday December 1. Dakshina Kannada district won the overall championship.

The winners of this event will participate in the national-level sports meet to be held in Ranchi next month.

Minister for Kannada and culture Umashree, who was the chief guest of the occasion, said that people from the coastal region are very open to cultivating a culture of sports. She added that each physical trainer has the responsibility of developing the cognitive ability of the children and motivate them to understand the need for a 'sports culture'.

More than 3,500 participants from 34 institutions attended the three-day sports meet and more than 200 physical trainers (PT) were deputed throughout the tournament. About 33 competitions were held and 99 medals were allotted.

Prizes were distributed to winners during the valedictory programme. Finance committee president Ramesh Kanchan, headed the programme.

CMC president Yuvaraj, S P Kagale, D S Radhamani, principal of government girls' pre-university college, Udupi, Roshan Kumar, district director of sports committee, Sitanadi Vittal Shetty and others were present.
