St Sebastian's Church fire: Delhi Archbishop urges PM Modi to order probe

Media Release

New Delhi, Dec 2: Delhi Archbishop Dr Anil Couto, has in a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union home minister Rajnath Singh, called on them to urgently order a judicial enquiry into the burning of the St Sebastian’s Church in Dilshad Garden in the national capital, New Delhi on Monday November 1. The entire interior, including the Altar, the Bible and the Cross were reduced to ashes.

On the complaint of Church priest Fr Anthony Francis, the police have registered an FIR against unknown outsiders for causing the fire with malicious intent. Senior officers of Delhi police, the special branch and the forensic crime unit came to the spot after many hours, and once the agitated members of the Catholic community blocked the roads in the area. Samples were retrieved from the inside of the church, which was still smelling of fuel oil.

Till late in the evening, police could not say they had made any progress in their investigations.

Addressing the media, Archbishop Couto said apart from the judicial enquiry, the government must repair the building before Christmas, ensure that policemen guilty of dereliction of duty are punished, and special police investigation teams are set up to trace the guilty.

Te Christian community cutting across denominations, and civil society have decided to protest at the offices of the Police Commissioner of Delhi on Tuesday morning to focus attention on the attempts to polarise the people in Delhi state which goes to the polls soon, and the continued persecution of Christians in Madhya Pradesh, Chhatishgarh and other tribal and rural areas.

On Sunday November 30, two house churches in Annupur district of Madhya Pradesh were attacked. Earlier in November, catholic priests in the Bastar region in Chhatisgarh were told all their schools were to install statues of Goddess Saraswati and they would not be allowed to be called “Father”, the usual honorific, by the students, but would be called “Acharya”. In other districts of Chhartisgarh, village panchayats under political influence have passed regulations banning non-Hindu religious persons from organising prayers or opening places of worship in their territory.

Archbishop Couto said the arson in St Sebastian’s church was condemnable not just because it was an act of sacrilege and hate against the community and its faith, but that it could happen in the national Capital which is just recovering from a series of communal incidents. Also distressing is the sense of police impunity. Long hours were lost, and possible evidence destroyed, before the police finally came.

St Sebastian’s church was constructed in 2001 and is among the biggest churches in East Delhi. The church was active till Sunday night because of religious ceremonies for catholic children receiving their first Holy Communion.

The night watchman had handed over charge to the day watchman at 5 am. parish priest Fr Francis was informed by the day watchman of the fire. The fire was still raging when Fr Francis informed the fire brigade and the police.

The community soon collected at the police station to impress on the officers to call in forensic experts. When the police failed to come, roads were blocked for some time. Those who visited the church included archbishops Anil Couto, Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, Bishop Jacob Mar Barnabas , several Members of Parliament, Arvind Kejriwal and former MLAs of the area.

What a lot of primitive and intolerant nonsense - it sounds as though you want to bring everything down to the level of the poorest instead of encouraging everyone to achieve their full potential in the 21st century. What are you afraid of, that you want to control and dominate others in this way? Learn to love and accept diversity, and to forgive perceived wrongs made against you, and you will be truly free to live in peace. And PRAY - pray for all peoples' freedom and well-being, and that India might grow in harmony and love.

Since you are a religious person i want to think about this. ok.

Why does the god allow the fire to destroy the buliding(here church). If anybody intentionally burnt it down then he should have intervined. So why he didnt do that?

You may think for youself that god allowed this to happen just to test the believers faith. Now think again.

If god wanted to test the faith of the believers this way then why bring up such unnecessary communal tension between community that may lead to violence.

Mr. Ramesh: Those people attacked Temples and personal attacks in the U.S. are caught and severely punished. But in India, when the minorities are attacked and Churches are burned, the political leverage will make the culprits to exit from proper punishment.

If the killers of Graham Stains were in the U.S. as they did in Orissa, they would have been uted based on the U.S. laws.
    What happened to them?

There will be misguided mentally sick people everywhere in the world, and they will do crimes against humanity but the deliberate attacks on Churches and poor Christian believers in India are so many from state to state like a nationwide problem when we look back to history.

If those people who burned the Church building in New Delhi are not caught and punished, that will be too horrible to understand and it will remain as a red flag on the Government.

So, people in India and around the world are watching this news with great attention. If a person with a Christian name is attacking a Temple or Mosque or any place of worship in front of me, in my capacity I will confront them without showing any mercy.

Everybody has the right to speak about their religious faith or political ideology to somebody if the listener wants to listen, but nobody has the right to touch anybody's place of worship or party office.

    i. Police will have no clue, dereliction of duty.

iv. Finally when aggrieved Christians frustrate and blame Govt.

Guys please type "attacks made by christians in india" on google search and the result will show the fact. Christians are not taught to attack others or to burn down religious institutions or to burn people alive. Use your religion and political believes within you to do good to people instead of showing your strength by burning down sacred places and by illtreating minorities. Teach activists of every political parties out there to see people as people not as a tagged person of an opposite party.

INDIAN, Mangalore: What you have said is absolutely correct.

These attacks on the Churches and the mistreatment of the minority Christians etc are seen all over the world in seconds.

If Mr. Modi can't give a picture of India as a peaceful country where all religious people are living in peace, then all his big dreams of Foreign Direct Investments by the billions will not be materialized. Those jobless wayward street rowdies don't know that open reality so for their fun, they attack the defenseless Christians. What a great accomplishment?

The new U.S. Foreign Relation Committee Chairperson who is a very rich man went to Haiti to help the poor people due to his Christian love for the suffering people. Never met him personally, but some of my friends are his friends, they gave me a vivid picture of his personality.

Many of the foreign leaders Mr. Modi met recently like the British Prime Minister and the Prime Minister of Australia are very committed Christian believers.
Australian PM is a Rhodes Scholar, finally he went to a Catholic seminary and though not a priest, but a very committed Christian believer, showed real Christian love towards Mr. Modi and hugged him when they met recently. These Christian persecution will reach their ears, and will be creating a bad image for India.

So, Mr. Modi has to take very strong actions to stop the persecution of the minorities, especially the defenseless Christian minorities because from time to time, they were the political target and scapegoats, which can't be tolerated any longer.

After Mr. Yeddyurappa came into power, in the month of July 2008, 14 attacks were taken place on the same day at the Churches. Great religious safety? I have watched them through U-tube, very troubling scenes of pure insanity and street rowidism!

Why, can you explain that? Why there is not any organized attack now? Some jobless street rowdies saw fun in attacking the people worshiping inside their own Church buildings, a bunch of police followed them and started beating the innocent believers. Do you think that the minorities are safe in India? You need not have to compare tolerance and safety level with the rest of the Asian countries. Every believer of any religion has their fundamental right to practice and spread their religion, as long as they will not endanger others physically through any force that is the fundamental human right!

    Dear Ramesh S, mangalore,

Where does the verdict comes with a fake report of church attacks and without ordering probe on church who lit the fire.

We are concerned about the safety of Christians and our worship places all over India.
I quote yours: In Kerala, a hindu boy & Muslim girl who married recently running for their life.no media coverage/ no debate!!.Unquote.
You are commenting about love affairs of citizens. We can comment relentlessly about such cases. It is not one or two or three, there are many such cases but I am commenting about the churches attacks and hampering of churches by litting firel

Dear KRPrabhuji I also quote from this news :On Sunday November 30, two house churches in Annupur district of Madhya Pradesh were attacked. Unquote.

Is it not a forcible action to be carried out by the Christians only because of the fundamentals of BJP and RSS to place statues of gods and goddesses in the premises?

What can I expect from you being a RSS supporter. The RSS hated Christians since and then pre-independence and still they hate Christians.
RSS is like Naanu Kumbala kaai Kaddhillaappa antha hegalu oresutthiddha Bhoopa.

    Naa
Some of your comments are your own illusions and from where you get all these bluffs.

So Ramesh, if congress does communal riots, that means BJP also need to follow the same? I know you feel bad if your party is accused. But fact remains the same. There is no difference between Congress and BJP. But if I criticise BJP you feel bad and if I criticise congress you feel happy. This is hypocricy. Use your commonsense and brain if you have.

Last week only slums area of minority population was bulldozed in delhi. Yesterday prayer hall of christian community church has gutted by mysterious fire. These all happen while elections are nearing. Delhi election is approaching. See their game plan at moradabad riots before the general election. This all well planned destructive act by so called religious chauvinist to divide the minority and majority on religious line to gain the politically. How minister MOS very comfortable giving communal ( hatred )after accepting oath under indian constitution which is secularist in character. This communalist should punished and banned.

Since this was taken place in Delhi in front of Mr. Modi, he can't say any excuse and hide behind the curtain.

He has to show his real personality and stand, to catch the culprits and punish them without any political favor. Indeed, a real test of his secular political vision, also the safety assurance of the minorities in India especially the Christian community.

I have said very plainly and affirmatively that Mr. Modi has to take strong initiative and action to find the culprits. I believe, you understood my plain logic now.
The persecution of the minority Christians and the destruction of their places of worship in India must be stopped.

Ramesh, your English says it all!! Do you know the meaning of In front of Modi?? How many incidents happened in Delhi when there were other PMs? It is true that this is the biggest test for Modi since he is the PM now. He already supported RSS misusing the Doordarshan but this is going to be very tricky for him. Do you know there was no problems when my Christian friends coming with me to Sharavu temple and when I go to Attur Church in Karkala? Now Bajrangis and Your beloved Ram Sena headed by a Tamilian made Mangalore a rough city. Do you really love India and want to see India as the strongest country? No country in the world became powerful being communal. India's resources would wasted to solve the communal problems if we do not get up now and realise that we all have to live here together or else we will be fighting forever like Israelis and Palestinians.

    These things were expected.

1] Delhi earlier saw a riot kind of situation. Luckily it did not flare up with the efforts of community leaders.

2] AMU vs BJP, where suddenly BJP realised to honour one donor. Since media covered the event and VC took the right step, warning central govt. BJP had to climb down.

3] Now with this church burning.

There is a sequence and there is political agenda, which is played over and over again now become more than obvious, who is behind it.

Earlier in November, catholic priests in the Bastar region in Chhatisgarh were told all their schools were to install statues of Goddess Saraswati and they would not be allowed to be called “Father”, the usual honorific, by the students, but would be called “Acharya”. ..Definitely there is arson since it is reported that kerosene found at the church..but i object to the comments where for each & everything finger pointed towards RSS/BJP..how come this, when there is no evidence!!..moreover,this incident doesnt help BJP but helps all sickular parties..since, elections nearer there is possibility of sickular parties doing all sorts of nuisance to play with minority sentiment..they also feed, help & grow JI parivaar which creating havoc in every state..but no one speaks..recent example is WB, when Burdwan blast took 2 lives state Govt said victims are one from majority & one from minority..But NIA investigation revealed they are terrorist both from minority community & familiies also accepted..In Kerala, a hindu boy & Muslim girl who married recently running for their life..no media coverage/ no debate!!..now who is hiding the fact & who is supporting deadly fringe groups..every successive Govts d terror group list, just check the available list who is who..there is larger conspiracy by sickular groups, unfortunately communities paying price..

Mr.Joseph,Welcome to the das of communalism.Dont jump to the conclusion by naming BJP or others before the police/other enquiry/probe.You can not rule out this as a case of case vengence against Modiji's govt/BJP by oppinents(?) in view of forthcoming election to Delhi. We have enough cases to indicate such acts of vengence against ruling govt just defame them specially in Mangalore three years back when BJP was ruling. In similar case of vandalism at Kankanady Alphose church few yrs back intitially church priests rushed to Press club to air their grievence instead of police. When police took action for enquiry it came to light there was undergarment of lady in the place and act of vandalism was related to that.Immepediate the people who conducted press meet rushed to police to stop frther action which will defame church people. In Managlore at Chembugudde masjid one night people threw stones and damaged the window panels and blame was on BJP as it was ruling.During police enquiry it was found that act was by own community people and reason was obvious.Enquiry made tuss.....everybody knows why.Nowadays Congress mafuas are active in such acts to defame BJP govt.If such do not do that they dont get reason to blame Modiji or BJP....this is what is happening.Anyhow, the act of burning the worship place like church is condemnable wish that law should take its own course and crimnals be brought to book who ever they may be.
