NATO to help modernise Ukrainian army

Brussels, Dec 2 (IANS/TASS): NATO countries set up four trust funds Tuesday to provide assistance to Ukraine with regard to military reforms.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an inter-governmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed April 4, 1949. It consists of 28 independent member countries.

The foreign ministers of the NATO countries set up the trusts.

"The funds are intended to reform and modernise the Ukrainian army in four sectors: logistics, command and control, cyber defence, military medicine and rehabilitation of the injured," said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a meeting in Brussels, the headquarters of NATO.

Stoltenberg also said NATO would not deliver weaponry to Kiev.

In addition to what is being done through NATO channels, many member countries assist Ukraine by supplying economic aid and military equipment, the secretary general said.
