Delhi gang posing as power company officials busted


New Delhi, Dec 3 (IANS): A group of men who pretended to be officials of the BSES and blackmailed people by accusing them of stealing power was arrested here, a statement said Wednesday.

Gang leader Rahul Sharma alias Brijesh Sharma was arrested along with one of his accomplice, Rajesh, after a coordinated operation by Delhi Police, BSES and residents of R.K. Puram and Sant Nagar in south Delhi.

While Sharma was sent to Tihar Jail for 14 days, his accomplice was remanded in custody two days. Police are still looking for the other members of the gang.

"Posing as BSES enforcement officials, the gang used to blackmail well-off residents by telling them that their electricity meter was tampered with, which amounts to power theft and not only attracts a heavy penalty but also imprisonment," said a statement by the BSES.

"Later, they would settle the matter in return of some cash," it added.

According to BSES, it had received a tip-off about the gang from a resident of R.K. Puram. informing it that the group's next target was a lady residing in Sant Nagar.
