PM should express regret over Sadhvi's remarks: Opposition

New Delhi, Dec 3 (Agencies): Sticking to their demand for resignation of Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, opposition parties today said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should express regret over the controversial remarks made by the Union Minister.

The parties also demanded that an FIR should be lodged against the minister for her "uncultured" comments.

"The Prime Minister appeared in the House after a long time. He was sitting there, he could have got up and expressed regret on this issue and condemned it," senior Congress leader Kamal Nath told reporters outside Parliament. He maintained that the statement of the minister has "hurt" the sentiments of secular minded people.

"The statement by the BJP minister has not only hurt the sentiments of a particular community, but all secular minded people. The apology by the minister was a confession yesterday," Nath, a former Union Minister, said.

Samajwadi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav said there should be "nothing less than resignation" on the issue.

"I am amazed at the statement of the government that the comments by the minister were made outside the House, but the issues we discuss the house are related to people's interest.

"Unless the Prime Minister assures us that he will take action against her, we will not stay quite," Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ashwani Kumar said.Lawyer and NCP's Rajya Sabha MP Majeed Memon said an FIR should be lodged against the minister under section 153 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (for promoting enmity against people on the grounds of religion, case, race, residence and language).

"The offence is non-compoundable and non-bailable. Till the time the minister does not resign, we will not allow the House to function," he said.

Jyoti had yesterday stoked a controversy by allegedly making communal remarks and using an expletive in an election rally here, leaving the BJP and the government embarrassed.

"Aapko tay karna hai ki Dilli mein sarkar Ramzadon ki banegi ya haramzadon ki. (You have to decide if you want a government in Delhi to be led by children of Lord Ram or illegitimate children)," she was quoted as saying.

In the Rajya Sabha, the members advanced to the speaker's podium, shouted slogans and demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's explanation on the issue.

"We feel shame in repeating what the minister has said. A mere apology is unacceptable," Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury said.

Congress leader Anand Sharma said: "We don't accept apology; prime minister should come to the house and sack the minister. It is a cognizable and non-compoundable crime, punishable up to three years in jail."

Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien had to thrice adjourn the proceedings of the house, before adjourning the house till 2 p.m.

Post lunch, opposition members continued shouting slogans and demanding the minister's dismissal from mthe council of ministers.

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Ramgopal Yadav said Jyoti's comment was against the secular spirit of Indian Constitution.

As the din continued, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj could not read out a statement on the recent foreign visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kurien asked her to table the statement, but the minister refused.

With the disruptions going on, the house was adjourned for half an hour and then for the day.

Similar scenes were witnessed in the Lok Sabha, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present.

Raising the issue, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said: "As the prime minister is present here today, I want the minister be asked to resign."

"I raise the issue again as some other statements had come after that and the prime minister has also said something," he said.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Pratap Rudy responded, saying the minister has already apologised.

"Yesterday, the issue was discussed and the minister also apologized. Why are they raising the issue again? If they are doing for political gains, then it is not right to disrupt the parliament proceedings."

The speaker also dismissed adjournment motion and notice for suspension of question hour.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said the minister had realised her mistake.

MPs went near the speaker's podium shouting slogans like "PM Jawab do (prime minister must answer). The minister should resign."

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said all members will have to apologise if such issues get raised all the time.

"If such issues are raised, everybody will have to apologise," she said.

The speaker also dismissed adjournment motion and notice for suspension of question hour.

However, as din continued, she adjourned the house briefly.

While sloganeering was witnessed after that too, there were no more adjournments and the house resumed work later.

It is wrong to make such derogatory remarks which hurt the people. Statements by Ministers who have sworn by the constitution should be such that they do not transgress the limits of freedom of speech. Making defamatory statements needs to be curbed by none other than the leader of the house ie., the Prime Minister. He should own the responsibility for having appointed illiterate, uncivilised and those with criminal records as Ministers in his team. Unless the PM sacks one or two of such unruly partymen/women the situation is not going to get under control.

'Medieval' BJP is just not the right choice for India in this 21st Century.

With radicals like Adityanath, Giriraj, Sadhvi continuing their hate speeches, and the rest talking about western scientists influenced by vedas, astrology being better than any other science, Shri Ganesha's Plastic surgery, HRD Ministry taking steps to force Sanskrit down our throats, etc.

India will have tough days ahead under these people.

As I remember in the year 1998- 1999, there was an article in Qatar(?) based daily paper (I could not recollect the name of the paper) A Arab writer wrote about the Indians comparing to Arab world, why Indian labors and workers needs to respected. As he was saying, When India is making computer chips, Arabs didn’t aware of make potato chips!

Do you think these makes him to write because of BJP ruling? Everyone should understand that Congress developed India from the roots, unfortunately people now praising Modi for all the developments.

This is just that the Congi's frustration seeing Modi becoming a national idol and they are in to all these. Or else why they need to pull along this subject. First time a PM forced his minister to apologise. That's Modi. I was very happy that at least one PM made his minister to realise the mistake and forced to apologise. Appreciate that. It never happened. Now , bring Modi's name and trying to pull along this subject... it just shows they are just in to these things , looking where to hit Modi's Govt. Lot more has happened in these few months which has never happened in these 60 years. Everybody knows their PM in India. and of course global leaders also know our PM and carries huge respect. One of the international leader mentioned that Modi is no more an India leader , he could be a potential world class leader. His thoughts, initiatives... wow. Really appreciated. Whole nation found it evident. Many initiative have become common initiative through out the nation , many organizations following those and all. We are proudof our PM. they call him NRI.. it's how aPM should ute. His focus should be on leadership... not just 100 % attendence at Parliament, just being mum. Just these other non BJP parties are trying their level best to pick some stupid topics and try to hit at Modi. That's it. Come on... grow up... at least respect the nation decision. They told you to shut and sit for few years from now. Please ...

Its a shame that BJP and Modi supports her perspective even if her utterance is against our constitution and unity of our Indian people.

If there is a thing like 'divide in unity' you BJP guys will win hands down.

we don't need ministers like Niranjan Jyoti in cabinet. She is very narrow minded individual and in my opinion she doesn't understand Hindu religion at all. Our religion does not teach us hatred towards any other religion.

Modi should ask her to resign from cabinet. This incident and others are diversions that hinder progress. Country's progress is more important than such extremists.
