Wide support for declaring June 21 International Yoga Day


New Delhi, Dec 3 (IANS): India has tabled a resolution in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) along with co-sponsors to declare June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, the Lok Sabha was informed Wednesday.

Minister of State for External Affairs General V.K. Singh told the house in a written reply that Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address at the 69th session of the UNGA Sep 27 had called upon the international community to declare an International Day of Yoga.

"Subsequently, a draft resolution was tabled in the UNGA by India and other co-sponsors to declare June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The response of the international community has been very positive," he said.

The minister said that the draft resolution had 167 sponsors as of Nov 27.
