Be fair while aiding states: Tamil Nadu CM

New Delhi, Dec 7 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam Sunday urged the central government to ensure "greater fairness" while assisting states vis-a-vis centrally sponsored schemes.

"There has to be greater fairness in the criteria adopted for the allocation of central assistance in such schemes," he said here.

"An approach which penalises states which have already invested their own resources to provide basic infrastructure is neither fair nor does it incentivise the performance," he added.

Panneerselvam was speaking at a meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the chief ministers of states to hear their views on the restructuring of the Planning Commission.

The chief minister recommended that there was a need for more clarity and certainty in the fund allocation for better planning and implementation of the schemes.

"The fund allocation formulae need to provide clarity and more certainty on the level of allocation for the year to enable for better planning and implementation."
