Ashrams run by 'godmen' like Rampal centres of terror: BJP

New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI): BJP has sought a ban on ashrams run by 'godmen' like Rampal, saying they have become centres of "terror" in the name of faith.

An editorial in the latest issue of party mouthpiece Kamal Sandesh said "These ashrams which have become centres of terror in the name of faith should be deeply investigated."

"People like Rampal are not born in a day. They spread their network of superstition gradually in the society... There should be a ban on these types of ashrams at the very beginning itself," it said.

Questioning as to who should be called a saint or a baba, the journal, edited by BJP Vice-President and Rajya Sabha MP Prabhat Jha, said the kind of exploitation done in the name of superstitions only shows that "we are still living in dark ages".

Though it did not name any 'godman' except Rampal, who was arrested last month after over a two week-long standoff between his supporters and police, but its strong criticism of such ashrams assumes significance because of their wide presence in several states and alleged proximity of some of these 'godmen' with the saffron party.

One ashram, Dera Sacha Sauda which is based in Sirsa and commands large following, had announced its support to BJP for the state assembly elections. The dera's head is facing several criminal cases.

Police had arrested Rampal after he refused to comply with court's summons, prompting Punjab and Haryana High Court to issue non-bailable warrants against him.

Praising the action of BJP government in Haryana, the editorial said it had sent a message that no one is above law.

If there isn't any hidden agenda, on the face value, this is good. But non-political(ordinary people) often learn late.

But come to think of it. Ms. Smriti Irani and various other ministers(ex & present) seek astrologers, palmists, conduct poojas etc - in a way some of it is superstition also. Who will single out 'GODMEN' vs religious men?

Don't belive so easily to this "U-turn" government.

When Karnataka state Govt proposed 'Anti-superstition' few months back, there was big scream by most of the Sangh Parivar outfits. They even labelled ruling Congress party as 'anti-hindu'. How can they tolerate ban on Ashrams or Dongi Babas now???
Because of blind followers, some Dongis have made BABAgiri or SADHUgiri, a profession & earning handsomely by fooling innocent.

    Mr Prem,
Your appeasement party is also so clever in fooling people but fact is that now they failed to fool people by by vote bank policy,

Just digest that even knowing this anti Godmen statemnt will harm hindu votes to BJP, Mr Modi dared to say this a unbiased statement, having interest of society, for him interest of country is more important rather than his own.

So now govt will decide who is godman and who is not. If govt really wants to eradicate superstition then they have to start within their own party. Now are we living in dark ages probably not but we are certainly moving towards there with our politicians pandering to religious leaders to win elections. I bet if Rampal would have been useful to any political party, then nothing would have happened to him.

Its a welcome move by BJP. They not only exploit poor people but also acts as transit point for politicians to cover up their ill gotten health. one more test case already exists in Haryana for them and if they take action against them then one can believe that BJP walks the talk.

Though I voted for Modi for development, I repent and realized that, "All the glitters are not gold" & " Barking dog seldom bite".
Ninety five percent of the Ashrams are FEKUS. Take an audit of all, have guts.???????
