Announce Gita a ‘national scripture’, says Sushma; Cong calls her statement ‘frivolous’

New Delhi, Dec 8 (IExpress) : External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday urged that the Bhagwad Gita be declared a ‘Rashtriya Granth’, adding that only a formal announcement to this effect was pending. “The Prime Minister has already given it the stature of national granth by gifting it to US President Barack Obama,” she said.

Speaking at an event on Red Front grounds to mark the “5,151st anniversary” of the Gita, organised by RSS-affiliate Global Inspiration and Enlightenment Organization of Gita (GIEOGITA), Swaraj also advised psychiatrists to read and prescribe the Gita to patients suffering from depression.

Soon after her statement, VHP president Ashok Singhal demanded that PM Narendra Modi declare the Gita a national scripture.
At the same event, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said the religious book has been considered above the Constitution.
Representatives of embassies of 20 countries were present at the event.

Criticising Swaraj’s remarks, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) said the Constitution was the “holy book” in a democracy. The Congress called her statement “frivolous”.

“All holy books are our pride,” Mamata Banerjee said. “The Quran, Puranas, Vedas, Vedanta, Bible, Tripitak, Zend-Avesta, Guru Granth Sahib, Gita — we respect all.”

The essence of the Gita lies in its substance and not in its symbolism, said the Congress’s Manish Tewari.

Khattar, who had to rush for a meeting of chief ministers called by the PM, was the first to speak among the leaders. “Gita ke sandesh ko jab hum dhyan se padhte hain to… to jaisa kaha hai hamare desh ka samvidhan hi Gita hai. Gita ko samvidhaan se upar maan liya gaya hai. Kisi bhi desh ka samvidhan kaal aur paristhithi ke hisab se badalta rehta hai, lekin Gita aisa saar hai jo sahasvat hai (When we read the Gita carefully… as has been said, our Constitution is the Gita itself. In fact, the Gita is considered above the Constitution. Any country’s constitution changes with time and circumstances, but the Gita is eternal),” said Khattar.

He added that Haryana had doubled the budget for ‘Gita Jayanti’, and requested the PM to issue a postal stamp on Gita Jayanti celebrations.

Urging that the Gita be prescribed to those suffering from depression, Swaraj said, “Depression is a rising problem. People believe eating chocolates and medicines will cure depression. My remedy is that if we read the Gita and live life as per it, we won’t be depressed. Our psychiatrists and counsellors should read the Gita and advise patients according to it. Every argument will end, every doubt will be removed.”

The Union minister credited the Gita with giving her strength during a particularly bad time in her life, and said she attributed her achievements to “Krishna kripa”. Swaraj also said that on December 11, the UN would declare June 21 as ‘Yoga Diwas’.

By making Geeta a national scripture, practicising is ur faith or religion is stopped is it?!

If we have something wrong for years, doesnt mean we dont set it right! ..those who say COnstituion.. where were they when Indira includes "SECULAR" word in it forcibly, killed democracy by imposing emergency? or.. when her son, rejected Supreme court verdict and ed a new law thru Vidheyak during shah bano case?! ...

where are they when Kashmir kicks out hindus and pelt stones on Amaranth or kousar nag pilgrims every year!... Condemning Hindu religion, Surya namaskar, yoga, astrology everything, while sending your kids to catechism, madrassa, mass, every day/week, are you not violating it?

did anyone ask you to read Geeta or practice it or go to sanskrit class? haar jageh pe, kyun taang atkaate ho! ? OK, ram mandir banane ne tum log ko problem hai, I udnerstand! but what is this fuss? SECULARISM is not one way traffic remember..!! even Jews in India or Parsis in India or Jains or Buddishts, sikhs , being minoirty have been protected.. no one even dares to touch or harass them! why only abrahamic religions have issues with it? think upon!! the large fundings from outside are destabilising the country!

Vellano, You have listed so called mistakes. Does making gita national scripture resolves those mistakes? Sushma and group may start saying they are not mandating to read it. Few yrs later they may demand to read it. Have you forgotten forcing vandana saraswati in schools?
Nation like india doesnt need national scripture. Also think about your tolerance level, just dont question it.

The main difference between BJP and Congress is that, former do not believe in Constitution of India. The very opportunity they get to alter the constitution they will do so. They are not concerned about social stability but they are in haste to implement Hindu upper caste hegemony .The Dalits, ,Backward Communities and Minorities should be aware of this and should not turn blind eye on their evil designs. Ambedkar was very much aware of this and he put a strong base for our Constitution. The RSS which has many evil design for their narrow minded goals will never able to succeed to destroy our social fabric.

No.. I dont agree! No need to force feed Geetha! let others do their teachings... That is not something "HINDU" at all!!...

no one has forced you to go to temple, do a bhajan in the evenings, no prayers, nothing of that sorts! that is why it is a great religion! Unknowingly you adhere to it, without even knowing and just observing others.. cos that is way of life! you walk into a temple without chappals, after taking bath.. probably wont go if you have eaten nonveg, fold ur hands in reverence.. evrything is not taught, but imbibed! ..most infact dont even pray inside a temple and just goto temple to enjoy celebration, food, music!! ..let it be that way!

here a sculptor, a mason, a phoolwala, a nariyal/banana shop, music, vadya guy, cook etc etc ..everybody benefits- without even having a faith in it porbably! .... christian women grow jasmine and make that garland and it is offered to God!.. Muslim musicians, play or ply people to temple in their bus or infact do business of pooja items like kalash/vesseles or weave cloths those are offered to God! etc whatver... everything is business/secularism/provides jobs... that is why I like my India!... but one finds objection in others beliefs, then I will oppose it!

Yes, that is true! it is liberalism and rest of the fashion to condemn everything related to Hindus!

I dont know why one has to have a loud speaker for religious instituition and while in UP, you have a problem if you have one on Hindu temples! and they got it down during ramdan!...

similarly in Delhi, a Maata ki chowki was ransacked and started a riot!!.... if a person wants to put his temple or any jagaran anywhere, who r these people to oppose!..
same thing is seen in Datta peetha! or kausar nag yatra or amarnath yatra.. those pilgrims were stoned, tents burnt!!...

There is no fear of GOD! and if you retaliate, then "Secularism is in danger"!! ... it is the Number of votes that makes a difference! .. Hindus should awaken and collectively vote as group, then people will listen to you!.... however, congress has spread it tentacles so well that, they will divide the society and Hindus will only oppose their upliftment! which is really funny!

what is wrong if GEETA (not even mahabharat) is made national book! it is pronunced/written here in India, Kurukshetra, close to delhi!... and majority still believes in it (may practices or not, might have read or not)... It is in one of the indeginous langauge of the land Snaskrit/devnagari... it is considered holy and stood test of time.... for 5151 years!.. while, it doesnt need any marketing, why are people so aversive to it.. I fail to understand..

I have lived in so many hotels around the country, and each room has a copy of "Bible" placed... its their wish... nobody stops them.. while rest of the faiths, dont want to keep it cos, it is either kept in prayer room or not kept in room meant for eating, drinking and doing sex like in hotel room!

I am sure not even 10% have read Geeta, cos Geeta is never force fed.. but hindu way of life, that we all follow, unknownligly swear and live by it!

    Cos, Krishna himself said,

    idam te natapaskaya
    nabhaktaya kadachana
    na chasusrushave vachyam
    na cha mam yo 'bhyasuyati

"This confidential knowledge may not be explained to those who are not austere, or devoted, or engaged in devotional service, nor to one who is envious of Me."... so, those who are not interested/aware/hate Krishna, dont have to read it!

I mean, I find all Holy books worthy of praise.. but ur argument is illogical! national icons/books/birds/sports are chosen form a pool of choices and most suited, indegnous, and indian values is represented!! ... if some play Ice hockey or polo or kambala or cricket doesnt mean it should be our national sport, Hockey it is! .. if tiger is chosen as nat animal..doesnt mean we hate elephants, lion, mouse, dog!! ...it is the matter of pride and possession!

And plz dont dictate terms as to what shoudl be done, why it shld continue with status quo! govt has mandate to choose.. it may or may not!.. you can still VOTE out the govt or apply PIL if u dont like it!

This Government is bent on impelementing RSS agenda in the country. RSS wanted Hindu Rastra from the time of independence and they killed Ghandi because he was more secular and was against their idea. What I admire RSS for is they never gave up their quest of taking the power in their hand and they systematically brought RSS men in the main stream. All the top BJP leaders are RSS caders at one time and some of them even now. They have succeeded in marginalizing Hindu's on one side and the rest of the religions on the other side. This is carried out even now so beautifully that they devided into two groups. One extreme group which makes statements everyday on Hindu issues and how they must be implemented and the other group to apply soothing to those statements when media or some seculars make noise about these so that they play good cop bad cop and make the public quiet. This works for them so good that all Hindu's take this in their favour and feel good that their religion is shown above all religions so they support BJP blindly. When the opposition makes noise, the Hinndu's feel offended and they start hating these secular parties.A muslim extreme party viz. MIM realized all these and they have formed their own group so that muslims vote only MIM.Other religions such as Christians have no place.
BJP must realize that they are playing a very dangerous game by breaking the secular fabric that India has maintained since independence and we must together fight this menace that this party is spreading. Dividing India by religions is so dangerous because most of India is illiterate and people will identify themselves only by their religion. We dont want another bloodshed that we have seen during the 1947 devide. All intellectuals and sane minded Indians must come forward and advise BJP to stop this campaign of deviding indians.

Don't you see what is happening to India day after day? I don't like religions because they divide people. We all are human beings. Not christians, Hindus or muslims. If at all we are divided today is because of these religions. Do you think Jesus created a religion? NO, he just asked everyone to follow his good teachings. If at all Christianity is created is by the people who came after him. Therefore God's have not brought divide in people but the people themselves. Let us Love one and all and that's how we can improve ourselves and our country.

As clvie, Kuwait has rightly said that since PM Modi is literally doing her job with his so many hyped up Foreign tours that poor External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj may have decided to bring some attention to herself by raking up the issue of the Gita.

Asa Gita is revealed to Krishna and the land of revelation is Bharath (India) no one should object to making it national scripture.. as geetha is a genuine revelation ... I welcome the move and support it as my children and grand children can read both Quran and Geetha and take lessons from them on a comparative basis.

The problem is we are heading towards Thaalibaan type of Society. Therefore People are expressing concern to prevent it from becoming extremists plus theocratic state.

Sushma has to focus on what is given in her portfolio. People voted BJP for the development and nothing else. Look at those countries which were created in the name of religion. That will be a grooming place for fundamentalists and finally people will be deprived of their freedom.

Day by day our Country is going far from the policies of West or China type of Governance and heading towards Pakistan type of hyper religiosity.
We are following those whom we hate most.

National or International scripture, its Holy book, there is no doubt about it. By announcing is there any benefit for Hindus or is there any harm for non-Hindus?

    Romith,

Alwyn is right. No country that rules the nation on religious terms has survived. You need not go very far, see the two nations in India's left and right. See the level of progress, see the in-fights to come to power, see the coups.

India has survived, developed to this extent because of its Constitution, its freedom of faith to citizens. From the day the present democracy is changed to religious basis, its time to count backwards towards stone age.

Why Gita alone ? Why not Quran, Bible, Guru-Granth-Saahib, and holy scriptures of Buddhists & Jains too ?

Indian courts already have a copy of all these scriptures. A Muslim is made to swear by Quran, Christian is made to swear by Bible, so on before uttering a word in the court. Now, where does this dame want to establish the scriptures ?

Why is Ms. Swaraj making problems more complicated ? Deal with the existing problems Madam, do not add to them.

    Mr. Nair,

I have no problems. My only plea is accompany Gita by Bible, Quran, Guru-Granth-Sahib and other faiths scriptures.

Do you have a problem with that ?

I think Mr.Nair has a problem with including the Bible, Quran, Guru Granth Sahib and Scriptures of other faiths as National Scriptures. That is his problem. Is it not obvious to you by now Lydia ?
Does it not seem that the BJP believe they only need to represent the interest of Hindus and not all Indians ?

If the Uniform Civil Code goes against or calls for changes to the tenets or religious practices of any faith it cannot be accepted.

So you see there is no comparison here.
