Central varsity to have one campus: Himachal CM

Dharamsala, Dec 8 (IANS): Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh Monday clarified that there would be only one campus of the Central University in Kangra district.

"You should not play politics with educational institutions. I fail to understand how one university can have two campuses. This is absurd," the chief minister said while replying to a question of BJP member Ravinder Ravi in the state assembly.

He said the campus, whether in Dehra or Dharamsala town, has to be at one place and that is Kangra district.

Virbhadra Singh said the identification of the location should be left to the experts, based on land availability.

Earlier, tempers ran high when Ravi accused the chief minister of double talk on the location of the university at different places.

At this the chief minister said the BJP should speak on facts.

He said then union finance minister P. Chidambaram had announced the Central University in Himachal Pradesh in October 2007. The state government had then decided to have it in Kangra district as it was most deserving.

However, when the BJP came to power in the state (December, 2007) it started playing politics over the university's location even within one district.

BJP leader and two-time former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said the land was available in Dehra but the government was misleading the people.

Dhumal said his government had never suggested two campuses.

Official sources said currently the Central University is running from two temporary campuses -- Shahpur and Dharamsala -- in Kangra district.
