Iran slams Israel air strikes on Syria

Tehran, Dec 8 (IANS): Iran has strongly condemned the latest Israeli airstrikes on Syria, saying they manifest Tel Aviv’s intention to destroy the Arab country.

“The air raids are a sign of Tel Aviv’s connivance with terrorist groups to destroy the Arab country and kill innocent Syrian people,” Press TV quoted Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Marzieh Afkham as saying Monday.

She further called on the UN to fulfill its duties to stop such aggression.

“The Zionist regime of Israel is seeking to cash in on the critical situation in Syria,” the spokesperson said, adding that Tel Aviv would suffer the consequences of fanning the flames of violence in the crisis hit country.

Israeli warplanes carried out two airstrikes against an area of the Damascus International Airport and another airport in the town of Dimas Sunday.

The Syrian army issued a statement later in the day, saying the air attacks by Tel Aviv were aimed at helping the Islamic State radical group militants operating in the Arab country

“This direct aggression by Israel was carried out to help the terrorists in Syria, after our armed forces secured important victories in Deir-e-zzor, Aleppo and other parts,” the statement said.

The international airport in Damascus is located in southeast of the capital near areas such as Eastern Ghouta, where IS militants have gained control over much of its territories.

Israel has carried out several airstrikes in Syria since the start of the war in the country in 2011.

The Syrian army has repeatedly seized huge quantities of Israeli made weapons and advanced military equipment from the foreign-backed militants inside Syria.
