Two bills withdrawn from Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Dec 8 (IANS): The government Monday withdrew two bills from the Rajya Sabha, one for nationalising coal mines, and the second on intellectual property rights.

The Coal Mines (Nationalisation) Amendment Bill, 2000 was introduced in the upper house in 2000, to amend the Coal Mines (Nationalisation) Act, 1973 to allow Indian companies, both in the public and private sectors, to mine coal in the country without the existing restriction of captive mining.

However, with opposition from several quarters, there was no further development on the bill.

The Protection and Utilisation of Public Funded Intellectual Property (PFIP) Bill was introduced in the house in 2008.

It was to provide incentives for creating and commercialising intellectual property from public funded research.

Both bills were withdrawn.
