Ugandan rebels suspected of killing 36 civilians in DRC

Kinshasa, Dec 9 (IANS): At least 36 people were killed between Saturday night and Sunday morning in Beni, a territory over 350 km from Goma town in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), sources said.

Civil society sources in the eastern part of the country Monday said the latest massacre of civilians could have been carried out by members of the Allied Democratic Forces, a Ugandan rebel group, Xinhua reported.

The armed men attacked local residents of a village in Beni, killing 20 people, among them a village chief, together with his entire family. They also killed 16 people in neighbouring villages, according to the sources.
