New Zealand passes new anti-terror bill

Wellington, Dec 10 (IANS): The New Zealand Parliament passed the new anti-terror bill, the Countering Terrorist Fighter Legislation Bill, media reported Wednesday.

The legislation was passed with the support of the Labour Party, the ACT New Zealand party and the United Future New Zealand party, said a statement issued by the government Tuesday.

Prime Minister John Key welcomed the passing of the new anti-terror bill.

The bill responds to the rapidly evolving threat posed by foreign terrorist fighters and growing international terrorism, and would enhance the safety and security of New Zealand.

"The threats faced by New Zealand have grown and it is important that we have the ability to respond to that," said the prime minister.

"The government has a responsibility to protect New Zealanders at home and abroad and this legislation, passed with the support of a range of political parties, will better enable us to do that," he added.

The bill will be subject to a sunset clause following a wider review of the intelligence agencies, their legislation as well as their oversight that would begin next year.
