Thailand to exclude amnesty law in new charter

Bangkok, Dec 10 (IANS): Thailand's Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) Wednesday said it will not include any amnesty-related content in the country's permanent constitution.

CDC spokesperson Lertrat Ratanavanich said the committee had completed the deliberation of most reports and summaries that were submitted by its subcommittees, adding that the only two subjects yet to be reviewed were the inspection of the use of power by the state and independent organisations and the election of political leaders, members of parliament, and the cabinet, the National News Bureau of Thailand reported.

According to Lertrat, the two matters will be discussed Thursday and Friday, after which the CDC will collect suggestions from the National Reform Council and start drafting the content of the new charter after the New Year.

He went on to affirm that the charter rewrite committee would not have an amnesty law included in the new constitution while admitting that it would propose setting up a new standing committee which would be in charge of promoting reconciliation and strengthening related works in Thailand.
