Russian envoy conveys Putin's support to Assad


Beirut, Dec 11 (IANS/EFE): Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov has reiterated President Vladimir Putin's support for his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, in the fight against terrorism.

According to a statement issued Wednesday by Syrian presidency, Bogdanov, who was in Damascus, conveyed a verbal message from Putin highlighting "bilateral ties and cooperation between the two countries".

Bogdanov's visit to Syria came after stops in Turkey and Lebanon.

He underlined that Russia will maintain its support for the Syrian people against the "ferocious terrorist attack they face".

Russia is one of the main international allies of Syria. The country, which is caught in a civil war for the past three years, has witnessed loss of more than 2,00,000 lives so far.
