New Delhi, Dec 11 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee Thursday inaugurated a financial literacy centre and a financial library in a bid to make the President's Estate a financially inclusive township, a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan said.

The initiatives were launched on Mukherjee's birthday to make Rashtrapati Bhavan and the President's Estate more people-friendly.

"A financial awareness festival was also held in which students of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Sarvodaya Vidyalaya as well as residents of the President's Estate were trained in financial literacy using a model bank branch of the State Bank of India," the statement said.

The National Payments Corporation of India through RuPay cards gave Rs. 25 to each student to buy books, educating them about card transactions. Financial games, quizzes and other activities were also organised for students, children and parents.

To develop a comprehensive strategy, an action plan was developed in association with representatives of United Bank of India, State Bank of India, Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority etc.

"Financial literacy-cum-inclusion camps for residents of the estate were organised Sep 27-28 and Dec 7-9 to enroll them in various schemes. Special attention was given to senior citizens, women, special children, domestic help and contractual workers," said the statement.

Domestic helps and contractual workers not covered under any health scheme were also provided benefits under the Delhi government's Arogya Yojana.

"The pilot project to make President's Estate a financially inclusive township has been undertaken to establish a model of convergence in government programmes and services and ensure that benefits of various schemes accrue to the around 5000 residents," said the statement.
