Bengaluru, Dec 11 (IANS): Namibia used India-made electronic voting machines (EVMs) in its presidential and national elections held Nov 28-29 across the southern African country, EVMs-maker Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) said Thursday.

"The Electoral Commission of Namibia conducted the presidential and general elections using our EVMs, making Namibia the first African nation to embrace the electronic voting system," the state-run company said in a statement here.

The elections were watched by members of the African Union and the South African Development Council.

The Namibian poll panel declared the results for both the elections Dec 1 in the capital Windhoek.

The Bengaluru-based company shipped 5,850 customised EVMs to Namibia in three installments along with battery packs, tabulators and printers.

"Our teams of engineers and technicians visited Namibia thrice this year to demonstrate the functioning of the EVMs and provide support to its poll officials in conducting the first by-elections and subsequently the general elections," the statement said.
