17 killed in Indonesia landslides

Jakarta, Dec 13 (IANS): Rescuers have found 17 corpses and suspended searching for the 91 missing people a day after Friday's landslides buried dozens of houses in Indonesia's Java island.

A heavy downpour was to be blamed for the disaster which occurred Friday evening in Banjanegara district, Xinhua reported.

The disaster also left 11 people seriously injured and four others suffering from minor wounds, an official said.

"The rescue operation is halted as the heavy rain might trigger a repeat of the landslide," he said.

The landslides also blocked roads, creating difficulties for sending heavy machinery equipment to the scene, the official added.
