Rape in cab fallout: Over 500 taxis impounded

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS): Continuing its crackdown on the city's taxi drivers and operators, the Delhi Traffic Police have impounded over 500 vehicles and prosecuted close to 4,000 drivers in the city, a statement said Saturday.

"Delhi Traffic Police in its continuing special drive against taxis and cabs over the last week have impounded 527 vehicles for violation of permit conditions, verified 1,073 taxi stands and have challaned 3,851 drivers for various violations of permit conditions," a statement by the police said.

"Random checking of taxis carrying women was also carried out in which 1,423 vehicles were stopped and checked," added the statement.

"This exercise shall be continued in future as well."

The police action comes in the wake of the rape of a 25-year-old woman executive by a cab driver of online taxi booking company Uber.

The Delhi government banned the company Dec 8 after finding that it had not been following transport rules.
