Tamil poet Subramania Bharti remembered

Agra, Dec 13 (IANS): Historians and scholars Saturday recalled the contribution of Tamil poet Subramania Bharti in consolidating national unity and presenting an egalitarian vision for India.

They were speaking at a seminar here organised by the Centre for Women's Studies, Aligarh Muslim University.

Chandni Bi of the Department of History said Bharti, who died at the rather early age of 38, penned brilliant poetry in English, Tamil and Hindi. He also knew French and Sanskrit very well.

Prof D. Murthy of the Department of Modern Indian Languages said Bharti was a great journalist who wrote revolutionary articles against the colonial rulers.

Bharti was also an ardent supporter of women's rights and questioned the legitimacy of male supremacy in society, Murthy said.
