Bullets that hit our soldiers are backed by drug money, says PM Modi

New Delhi, Dec 14 (NDTV): As promised, Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about the menace of drugs in his third radio address to the nation, Mann ki Baat, today.

"You may think why the PM is speaking on the radio," he said. "I have always heard that if you share grief, you lessen your burden and if you share your happiness, it increases. I'm pained by the grief of families whose children get caught in the trap of drug menace."

During his last radio address on November 4, the Prime Minister had invited views on the issue and had asked NGOs to share their experiences. " I am worried as some sons and daughters get stuck with drugs and the entire family is torn apart," he said today.

Describing drugs as a "3D problem - darkness, destruction, devastation," he said the government will start a toll-free helpline to tackle the issue, since it is often the parents who have trouble discussing the matter. Celebrities should do their bit and former addicts should step forward to share their stories, he said.

"When I was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, people working under me asked for leave. They would not specify the reason, but when prodded gently, they would tell me that their child was addicted to drugs. I have come across helpless and angry mothers in Punjab."

But in such cases, it is drugs which is to be rejected, not the child, he said. A child does not become "bad," parents need to monitor them, their friends, their habits, mobile phones, he said.

"Our ancestors said a child should be treated with love until the age of five years, by the age of 10, a child should be disciplined and when he is 16, treat him like a friend," he said.

The drug habit creeps in only on youth who have no particular goal or dream in life. To evade the lure of drugs, one has to be focused and result-oriented, like a sportsperson, he added. Addressing the youth directly, he said, "Have you ever wondered, where the money you spend on drugs go? The bullet that hits our soldiers is backed by drug money."

The Prime Minister had started his radio chats on October 3 with a 15-minute speech titled 'Mann ki Baat'. In it, he had asked people to join the Clean India campaign. In the second, he had discussed the issue of black money, vowing to bring back "every penny of poor man's money" stashed abroad as it was "an article of faith" for him.

Our honorable pm NAMO has a golden chance to stop drugs menace now.
One more observation that - the recent escalation of bullets of terrorists comming from across the border towards hindustan's terriry is it wrong to presume that drug consumption by hindustani's increased during the last 6 months or so.

So long as there's demand for drugs, it's impossible to stop the supply. When the superpower US of A hasn't succeeded in this, I don't think we have much of a hope in this regard. In many countries drug lords/Mafia run the parallel governments, not to mention the tons of dough they 'invest' during elections to have their puppets in power. The key is to curb the demand. But the question is who'll bell the cat. In high society doing drugs is a way of life. Abu Salem who's behind bars at the moment used to be a supplier of drugs to Bollywood and other celebrities. There must be hundreds of Abu Salems still on the loose. Even in our own Mangalore selling hashish/Ganja and even acid (LSD) not too uncommon in many college campuses. The big question is, if a father consumes alcohol and smokes cigarettes, does he have moral right to say his son/daughter not to do drugs?

Drugs have been issue for all kin of political parties!.. One big leaders son had to be brought back from BOSTON, by NSA and then PM's intervention! Same PM had tough time dealing with his colleagues son who got caught with drugs, overdoes death of his friend etc!! .... surprsingly both these heir apparents had same name..vhe vhe vhe!

something should be done! drugs are peddled via pakistan route into Punjab and also south! SOMEHOW, IT IS UGLY! and they are targetting youth! Punjabi youth more prone cos, they have bottomles pit of agricultural cash, and a land that is so fertile with 5 rivers that this will never cease to produce! but all yougnsters have got a big fuell guzzling SUV and spend time in Gurgaon, Chandigadh and Delhi night clubs! ... result is A MENACE OD DRUGS, GUNS and GIRLS!!! *hit has hit the fan.. time to curb it via a national law! and clamping the wings of drug lords!

yes, akali dal is the main reason for drug menace in punjab.badal familys relative is the guy who is the kingpin of drug business in punjab who is transporting drugs from pak to india via punjab.

bjp is not happy with these alliance as akali dal is not ready to stop it as the guy is badals relative and is a lucrative business.

navjot singh sidhhu who was bjp mp revolted against badals family mainly for this drug issue and as a result badals forced bjp to deny siddhu mp ticket in 2014.

bjp won everywhere in india but could not win more seats in punjab bcoz whole punjab is affected by drug menace suppoprted by badals family.thats why bjp-akali dal got only 6 seats and aap got 4 and cong 4.

modi is not happy with badals bcoz of this issue and most probably bjp will go single handedly in coming punjab assembly elections like what they have done in maharastra.if bjp goes to assembly elections jointly with akalis they will be defeated humiliatingly, not bcoz of any other issue but akali dals support to drug mafia issue.bjp is clean ,but akali dal has gone rogue. in punjab.power has corrupted them.

let this drug menace end in india once and for all.

Dear Sudhakar, here nobody having sympathy on terrorists. I hate terrorism. But if any one talks against BJP govt & Modi, you people are considering him as a anti nationals or terrorist. That is proved from your leader's statements like "those who not voted for BJP, go to Pakistan" and "Ramzada-Ha##m zaada" etc.
When we notified about failure of the present Central govt, you are frustrated and you cannot face the criticism. Now itself your Modi scaring to attend the parliament as he have no courage to face the opposition parties. That's why he is roaming in the foreign countries.

I don’t have any objection of your criticizing the performance of this BJP govt. It is the right of every Indian citizen.

But, I just highlighted how you pseudo chameleons’ change your colour. If you are not having any sympathy on terrorism, can you explain what you wanted to prove here in DW yesterday when you commented “Very handsome gentleman. I don't believe he is involved in any terrorism activity” in reply to the article arrest of ISIS sympathizer in Bengaluru. And you got 141 disagrees as compared to only 14 agree. I would have given 100 likes if you commented praising the good work of our police dept. arresting ISIS sympathizer. Instead of that you tried to defend that anti national.

We are tired of hearing talk. It is time for action now. If the US is capable of covert action to eliminate OBL in Abbottabad why cant India do something similar.
I am not advocating all out war but definitely some punitive action is required from time to time like surgical/precision strikes, guerilla warfare, hit Pakistan economically wherever possible etc..
