Sydney, Dec 15 (IANS): The police forces have moved to a "footing" similar to tackling a terror attack, said an official Monday after a gunman took nearly three dozen people hostage at a cafe here.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said that police forces have moved to a "footing" similar to dealing with a terrorist attack, the West Australian reported.
"We have not yet confirmed if this is a terrorism-related event. We are dealing with a hostage situation with an armed offender," Scipione was quoted as saying.
The dramatic siege took place in Sydney's bustling central business district, days ahead of Christmas.
