BJP enrols 12 lakh new members in Uttar Pradesh


Lucknow, Dec 16 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday announced that the state unit of the party has enrolled 12 lakh new members in the ongoing membership drive, launched Nov 1, pushing the total strength of its members to 42 lakh in the state.

Speaking at a press conference here, BJP's state unit chief Laxmikant Bajpayi said the nationwide membership had reached 1.54 crore members till Dec 15.

Taking the membership drive to another level, he said the party would now undertake a "Booth Chalo Sadasyata Abhiyaan" Dec 19-21, aimed at making members at the grassroot level.

The party would undertake a membership drive Dec 25-31 among the intellectuals and all legislators and MPs have been asked to be directly and actively involved in the membership drive, he added.

Bajpayi also announced that Dec 25, which will be the 90th birthday of former prime minister and senior party leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee, would be observed as "Good Governance Day" across the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to be in Varanasi, his parliamentary constituency, Dec 25 where he will partake in several events to commemorate the day.

Bajpayi also announced that the state unit of the BJP would soon launch a statewide stir against the ruling Akhilesh Yadav government and "expose the corruption" it was involved in.
