'Safe' tourism rail coaches soon, says minister

New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS): The tourism ministry Tuesday said it has an ambitious plan to introduce "special tourism coaches" on popular routes like Agra and Varanasi for "safe and secure" travel, if its proposal is accepted by the railway ministry.

"We will be approaching the railway ministry soon with the project. The project is at the initial stages but we envision it as something that will make travel extremely safe and secure for tourists," Tourism and Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma told reporters here at an informal meeting.

"We plan to have cameras in that coach and we would also have detailed background information of travellers in the coach," he added.

The minister said one might have to pay "extra" for this coach, but it would definitely be the safest mode of travel.
