One dead as heavy snowfall hits Japan

Tokyo, Dec 17 (IANS): At least one person was killed as snow, strong winds and high waves hit wide areas of Japan Wednesday, media reported.

A truck driver was killed when his vehicle skidded and hit a car in Ontake in Hiroshima prefecture, Japan Times reported.

Movement of trains and flights was severely disrupted, particularly in Hokkaido and Tohoku as a low-pressure system developed near Hokkaido, the report said.

The Meteorological Agency said storms would continue through Thursday, especially in Hokkaido and other parts of northern Japan.

It warned of blizzards, tidal waves and avalanches.
