Chandigarh, Dec 17 (IANS): The Sikh holy city of Amritsar was the coldest place in the plains of Punjab and Haryana Wednesday with the minimum temperature just a degree above the freezing point. Cold wave conditions are likely to intensify in the coming days.
Weather officials here said the maximum temperature in Amritsar was 13.9 degrees Celsius, seven degrees below what is normal for this time of the season.
Many parts of Punjab and Haryana saw moderate to thick fog which affected normal life, including road and rail traffic.
In Haryana, Hisar was the coldest place with a low of 5.6 degrees Celsius and a maximum of a mere 14.4 degrees Celsius.
Chandigarh recorded a high of 18.2 and a minimum of 6.8 degrees Celsius.
Foggy conditions are likely to be seen in the coming days.
