In Peshawar attack, gunmen played horrific mind games with students

Peshawar, Dec 18 (AFP): Taliban gunmen who stormed a school in northwest Pakistan toyed with captive students by suggesting some could be let go before lining them up and gunning them down in front of their classmates, according to a new account by survivors.

Militants rampaged through an army-run school in Peshawar and killed at least 141 people on Tuesday, almost all of them children.

Pakistan is in mourning over the attack, the bloodiest in the nation's history, which brought international condemnation and promises of a stern crackdown by political and military leaders.

Previous accounts by witnesses have indicated a pattern of indiscriminate firing on students with those fortunate enough to survive playing dead while the attackers moved on.

But Shahnawaz Khan, a 14-year-old who was being treated in a Peshawar hospital for two bullet wounds to his shoulder, said the attackers also engaged in sadistic games.

He said he and his class were in the middle of an English grammar lecture when they heard gunshots, though their teacher said it was a first-aid class and the sound could be coming from a demonstration.

"But after a while the sounds of gunshots grew louder and we were hearing screams of students," said Khan, the son of a former local government official.

"Our teacher opened the door and suddenly rushed back to the room and shouted 'get under the benches', he was trying to lock the door when someone pushed it from outside and he fell to the ground. Two men wearing army-like uniforms carrying AK-47s barged into the room and told us not to make any noise and do as they say."

Khan said the man asked for eight students who wish to be let go to raise their hands, with almost the entire class responding to the call by doing so.

"They took eight students of their choice and made them stand in front of the class near the blackboard facing the wall and told us to watch the students," he continued, as one of gunmen, whom Khan described as burly, forced the class teacher on to a chair.

"He told our teacher: 'Watch as your loved ones die. Ours are also being killed in the same way.'"

The gunmen then opened fire on the children who slumped to the ground, some dead and others writhing and moaning in agony.

Khan continued: "The other guy standing near the door said 'I want eight more students now so whose turn is it to die first?' Nobody raised their hands and he tried to grab students and take them in front of the class but the students were grabbing each other tightly refusing to go."

As the students struggled, Khan said one gunman turned to the other and told him they should leave because they could hear troops arriving.

"Then they started spraying bullets on us indiscriminately and left, I got two bullets on my shoulder. I took my tie and tried to stop my bleeding but I fell unconscious," said Khan, adding that he awoke on a hospital bed and did not know how many others had survived.

His account was confirmed by the class teacher, who also survived and was being treated in the same hospital for bullet wounds to his shoulder and chest.

"I wanted to help them but I was helpless," the 46-year-old said who did not wish to be named said as he wept.

TTP spokesman Muhammad Khorasani claimed the school attack as revenge for a military offensive against militant strongholds, saying they wanted the army to "feel the pain" they had felt at losing loved ones.

I agree with you, we need to combined together and eradicate these ba###rds responsible for the barbaric act. But you cannot call them as Islamic terrorists as Islam doesn’t encourage violence. The involved in these incidents may be born to Muslim parents, but no way are they following teachings of Islam. For example if the police arrests a thief belong your community for stealing, do you call the entire community as thieves? Handful of people in all religions going against the teachings of their religion but you cannot label the whole community. You are based in an Islamic country, and how do you find the people there! Are they all terrorists?

The Pakis killed, tortured, raped crores of Hindus during partition. Then we cried for our Hindu bretherns.

The same Pakis are now killing their own children. Now also, we Hindus are extending our sympathies to these children.

This shows the greatness of Hindus.

We have acted tough when Pakistan troubled us. But, we help them when they are in trouble.

We are tougher than diamond and also tender than flower [translation of a Sanskrit Shloka].

I hope people change for the better in their own interest.

Yes, they will never change. Till recently they were supporting Pakistan. They were bursting crackers when Pakistan won hockey or cricket match against India. Now, they are dissociating from Pakistan as world knows that Pakistan is a rogue state. But, at heart they are with Pakistan and always dangerous to us.

We should become stronger and destroy these evils.

Sick bas###ds, monsters in fact not human beings who believe in humanity. Doing all for assumed heaven as brainwashed by their perpetrators. Time for all the world forces affected by various forms of Islamic terrorists to join together as allied forces and eliminate them till the last one is not erased from this globe. Cannot trust pak army anymore. Most part of the granted funds are misused by vote bank politicians there who are sympathisers of these militants and remaining by isi for all its bad work. Only 10 % is really used for the claimed purpose.

Almost every country is willing to support Pakistan now, to end terrorism.
Ball is in Pakistan court, it's their call... whether to continue support to growing terrorists in the country or to eliminate them.

What is the use Prem ? Other nations willing to offer help will never work because the entire Pakistani establishment is fu###d up. Why do you think the USA never informed the Pak government when they conducted that covert operation to eliminate OBL ?
Please understand that the entire Pak establishment i.e. the Government, the politicians, the Opposition parties, the ISI, the Armed Forces leadership are all in one way or the other involved or have used the Terrorists and Extremists like the LeT, Taliban etc. at some point of time or the other for their own selfish and diabolical goals.

They give a damn if lives are lost in the process. That is why Pakistan today is a rogue state. No one can be trusted there.
