Two killed, three injured in Afghan suicide bombing

Kabul, Dec 18 (IANS): At least two people were killed and three policemen injured when a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb in Afghanistan's capital Kabul Thursday, the police said.

On a confirmed tip-off, the Kabul police identified and intercepted a suicide bomber in Tang-e-Tarakhel, a locality in northeastern Kabul, Xinhua reported.

"As the police approached the vehicle, the bomber detonated his car bomb, killing one police and the attacker himself on the spot," said Hashmat Stanikzai, Kabul police spokesman.

The attacker tried to target a crowded area in Kabul and the potential threat was thwarted by the police, the spokesman said in a statement, without providing details.

Earlier, reports said four security forces died in the blast.

The Taliban insurgent group has claimed responsibility of the attack.

The Taliban has intensified attacks with a string of bombings over the past couple of months as the NATO and US forces are withdrawing from the country.

The war-torn country is due to take over the responsibility of its own security from NATO-led troops by the end of year.
