Faridabad teenager dies weeks after self-immolation bid

New Delhi, Dec 22 (IANS): Weeks after being admitted to Delhi's Safdarjung hospital for treatment of burns sustained during a self-immolation bid, a 14-year-old boy from Faridabad succumbed to his injuries Monday, hospital authorities said.

"The boy had suffered 40 percent burns. Despite treatment, his kidney and lungs stopped functioning. He died 5.25 a.m. today (Monday)," Rajpal, the hospital's medical superintendent, told reporters.

Kaustubh Pandit, a student of a private school in Faridabad, had set himself on fire November 26.

Police said though the actual reason was yet to be ascertained, the initial investigation showed that the boy was allegedly harassed by his teacher in front of his classmates, leading him to take such an extreme step.

"The boy had also confessed to have procured the fuel from a petrol pump in a bottle, hid it in his school bag and then ignited himself in the second floor washroom," a police official said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem.
